American Shorthair Cats

There are many types of different cats in the world today. There are also many different types of breeds. Not all cats are the same and act the same. There are many things that you need to know before you buy a cat. Let's look at a wonderful cat, the American Shorthair cat.

The American Shorthair cat is said to come from Britain. The early settlers brought cats to help keep the food safe from mice. The cats adapted to the North American climate and breeders later bred the cats to have specific characteristics. The American Shorthair cat used to be known as the Domestic Shorthair but the name was changed in 1966. It is known as the All American cat.

The American Shorthair cat is a really active cat. It loves playing and running around. The cats are usually large and actually have a more powerful body than the British Shorthair, where the cat came from. The American Shorthair cat's coat is usually very thick and has a bunch of different colors in it.

The American Shorthair cat doesn't require much maintenance. You should of course still brush your cat's hair at least once a week, but they can groom themselves. They are not like the Persian cats where they have to be groomed at least once a day. The American Shorthair cat needs to be taken to the vet still and have check ups and shots done, like any other cat, but everything else is pretty much easy. These cats are great for people who don't want a lot of extra maintenance.

Male American Shorthair cats are usually around fifteen pounds while the female American Shorthair cats are usually around ten pounds. They usually have pretty long tails and have strong but thin bodies.

Colors for the American Shorthair cat are anywhere from a tabby color to white. It is one of the cats with the most variety of color in the same breed, and it's still able to be called a part of the breed.

Some cats have health problems that we know about. Unfortunately the American Shorthair cat has a high risk for a certain type of heart disease. It is important that you have check ups for your cat so that you can make sure that your cat gets the help he needs.

Cats really make wonderful pets. They aren't the best for young children, but they are great as your family gets older. If you are thinking about getting a cat or any type of pet, remember to get as much information as you can so that you will make sure that you get the right pet for your family.
