Facts About Cat Health

Keeping your cat healthy can take quite a bit of time on your part, not to mention money. While cats make great house pets for individuals and families they require certain care and attention in order to be happy. There are some certain things you can do as a pet owner to ensure your cat stays healthy and strong. Here are some basic facts about cats' health and some tips on what you can do to keep your cat healthy.

Grooming

Grooming is just one aspect of keeping your cat healthy. There are several different parts to keeping a cat well groomed. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Give your cats a bath every now and then. Cats in general are rather clean animals as most are in the habit of licking themselves. It may sound unappealing, but cats can keep themselves quite clean through licking. This doesn't mean that you should neglect giving them a bath every now and then, especially if you ever let them go outside. Bathing your cat can keep their fur clean and from getting into knots.

2. Brushing your cat. Brushing is another part of the grooming process and is usually required more often than bathing. Depending on how long your cat's fur is will depend on how often you brush it. Long fur tends to get matted and knotted much easier than short hair and will require brushing much more often. With that in mind, short hair is still susceptible to becoming knotted and will also require brushing. There are several different tools you can purchase to do this, or you can take them to a professional groomer.

Healthy Eating Habits

It sounds silly right, how can you not feed a cat the right thing? After all, you just have to go to the store and buy "cat food." Well, for some it seems like that is common sense, however for others it is not and you might be surprised at what they end up feeding their cat. In order to keep your cat healthy you have to feed it the right foods and the right proportions. Cats need certain nutrients and vitamins just like human beings do so it's important to be aware of what those are. Ask your vet if you're feeding them the right kind of cat food. If you're not, then find out what you should be feeding them and change their eating habits.

Exercise and Play

While it's true that the majority of cats will spend their time sleeping, it's also important to make sure that they get enough exercise and play time. Different cat breeds have different temperaments, but all require some play time. That could mean playing with you or playing with toys or another animal. Overweight cats can have diseases and may even die. If a cat has time to exercise and play during the day, it will sleep less and be more healthy.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are another important part of keeping your cat healthy. Make sure you schedule regular check ups with the vet, and you might also consider getting them spayed or neutered. Getting your cat regular vaccinations, spayed, or neutered can actually extend their life about two or three years.

These may seem like simple, silly facts about cats' health, but they will help in keeping your cat healthy, strong, and alive much longer.
