Keeping Your Cat Happy and Healthy
Maintaining your cat's health for cat lovers is one of the most important things in the world. Keeping your cat happy and healthy can be done quite easily by scheduling annual visits to the veterinarian (and other necessary visits), and performing daily home examinations. Let's look at some things you can do at home and away to keep your cat happy and healthy.
Check from head to tail
Every time you sit down on the couch with your cat do a head to tail check. Here are some things to look for:
· Are your cat's ears clean and pink? Is there any type of odor? Sometimes mites get into cats' ears and will appear as a black, waxy mess. Check to see if there is anything you can see that may look like this.
· Are their eyes bright, clear and focused; free of discharge?
· Look at their teeth to make sure the gums are pink and the teeth are clean. Do they have bad breath?
Is your cat a happy cat?
· Feel your cat's body for any type of lumps or bumps from the neckline down to the tail. Are there any swollen parts on their body, sores, or irregularities? Make sure you remember to look behind the ears, between toes, and in all the way down the tail.
Grooming your cat
Just like humans, cats also need a good grooming. A good brushing is always a great way to keep them happy and healthy as it can remove any dead skin cells and loose hair. You can use metal combs that are designed to lift fleas out of the coat. If you want to cut down on all the shedding, then try to do this daily to remove as much loose hair as possible. It's also a good idea to do this every day to keep your cat from ingesting hair when they groom themselves. Keep your cat's claws trimmed to the proper length so they don't grow into paw pads. If you don't know how then ask your veterinarian.
Safety tips
Keeping your cat safe is also another part of keeping them happy and healthy. Here are some quick safety tips for cats:
· During the hot summer months make sure your cat is lots of water to drink and a cool place to relax. Heat stroke and dehydration are real dangers for cats, especially during the summer.
· Don't leave your cat inside the car; even with the windows open. During the summer it can take only minutes for the temperature to reach above 100 degress and that can kill a cat.
· If you live in a condo or an apartment that is off the ground make sure you have screens on your windows if you leave them open.
· This may sound extreme, but if your cat has fair skin and they are outside during the summer make sure you apply some sunscreen to its nose and ears to avoid a sunburn.
Keeping your cat happy and healthy is much like taking care of a child. They require constant attention, grooming, and need safety measure taken to ensure their health and safety. Take care of your cat and they will love you for it.
