Litter Box Training for Kittens

Humans love baby animals. But, as many of us know, owning a baby animal is a little bit like having a new human baby. They need to be trained in such a way that they will learn proper behaviour. Will you also be able to train your kitten to behave well? What does it mean for a cat to behave well? For most housecats this means that they don't bite or scratch people. It means that they don't make too much noise, and one very important element is that they do not make mistakes with the litter box. A cat or kitten that cannot learn to use a litter box is a disaster. Naturally it will take them time to learn, but if they simply cannot learn then you have a problem on your hands. This is why it is very important to start with the proper training and know how. Here is a good method that should help you to train your kitten to use the litter box appropriately.

First, you will need the basic materials for this training. You will need a litter box, kitty litter, and some sort of scooper. The box needs to be fairly low to the ground so that the kitten can climb into it. This means that a typical type of litter box for a cat will probably not work. You should also avoid using clumping kitty litter when training kittens.
Next, select a location for the litter box. This will be the location that you want it to stay in for the life of the cat. Good locations are places with non-porous floors, such as garages, or bathrooms. The room needs to be clean and quiet. A busy room will disturb the cat. Realize that cats are fairly private and clean animals. A dirty room with lots of smells will definitely be a problem.

Keep the kitten in the room for several days without letting it out. Make sure to give it attention during this time. Keep food and water in a different part of the room than the litter box, preferably as far away as possible. After the kitten has eaten, take it to the litter box and rub its paw in the kitty litter. Help the kitten to know that the litter is clean (you can do this partly by keeping the litter clean all the time). When the kitten starts to use the litter box appropriatley praise it and give it some sort of treat. Realize that punishing a kitten will not work. Punishment will only confuse the animal or make it afraid.
Using this method you should be able to train your kitten to use the litter box. Be patient and persistent and you will see good results quickly.
