Maine Coon Cats

Maine Coon cats are actually some of the most popular cats. They are very lovable and great for a family pet. There are several different characteristics of cats that show up and make them different from each other. Let's learn a little more about the Maine Coon cat.

Maine Coon cats actually came from Maine. They seem to come from that area only, much like the Persian cats originated in Persia, now Iran. They were the main cat that was seen around in the early part of the 1800s.

Maine Coon cats are very strong. It is believed that many cats came over on ships and only the ones who were tough lived. They had to survive harsh winters and so the weak ones would not live through the harsh New England winters.

Maine Coon cats have a thick coat of fur. It isn't as long as the Persian breed of cats, but it is long. Their fur is also water resistant and very strong. It is a cat that was used to being outdoors and over several decades the fur developed into a very good outdoor coat.

Maine Coon cats can weigh up to twenty five pounds. They usually are less than that, but they are very large cats. They are also very active. Maine Coon cats are usually brown, but they have many different colors that are accepted as the Maine Coon breed. They also have several different eye colors. Sometimes the Maine Coon cats have an 'M' shape on their upper face. Not all have it but it is a characteristic of the cat. They also usually have large ears. They don't require a ton of grooming like the Persian cat, because they can groom themselves.

Maine Coon cats are very playful. They are also very smart. They can pick up things easily with their paws and often use them for play or for doing other things. Maine Coon cats like to open doors, pick up really small things, and will sometimes eat from their own paws. They are considered to be some of the smartest cats.

Maine Coon cats usually like eating with someone there. Sometimes dogs will like to eat alone or not while their owner is watching them or in the room with them. Maine Coon cats are the opposite. They want someone there, not necessarily watching them, but similar to how we like eating together at the dinner table.

Most Maine Coon cats will like playing with water. They don't like being in it, but they will put things in it or see what happens when they touch it. They also like playing a lot. They will sometimes play fetch like a dog would. They also like following their owners. Just like a dog, they follow the owners around as if they are a constant companion. They are a very calm, but playful type of cat.

Maine Coon cats are great if you want a cat that is slightly larger than normal. They will want to play a lot, but they aren't ideal for young families. Young children could easily get knocked over by the cat.
