The 411 on Dogs and Cats Living Together

Do you have both dogs and cats? Some dogs and cats get along together under the same roof, while other cats and dogs fight until there is no tomorrow! If you have dogs and cats that live together, or if you are considering bringing a cat or dog into your home (and into the life of the pets that you already have!), then there are a couple of things that you should know. Here is the 411 on dogs and cats living together:

• It is a good idea to bring the pets together when they are young: It has been suggested that one of the best ways to get dogs and cats to live together peaceably is to bring them together when they are young, preferably when they are puppies and kittens. This way, the animals will grow up accustomed to one another and there will be less of a chance that they will fight. In addition, if you introduce your pets at a young age, there is a better chance that they will not be territorial of their space (or of you, for that matter!).
• Give a proper introduction: Another one of the most important things that you should know about dogs and cats living together is that they need a proper introduction. When you introduce a dog and a cat, it is a good idea to let the cat be confined in a smaller space for a couple of days. This will give the cat the chance to become used to hearing the sounds of the dog. The cat will become more used to smelling the dog as well. You should also keep the dog on a leash during this introduction period, so that the cat can have a chance to escape if necessary. In addition, do not force interaction between the dog and the cat. Just make sure that they get used to each other, and over time they will begin to interact and get along.
• Don't let them fight and "work it out": It is a really bad idea to just let your pets fight with each other and "work out their differences." Animals are not like humans, who can reach a point of reconciliation. Besides, having this kind of an approach is too stressful for the animals, and it also can potentially cause a lot of damage to your property in the process!
• Let them have their separate areas: You might find that you will need to separate the food dishes of your dog and cat. Sometimes when dogs and cats live together, they begin to meddle with and eat the food left out for the other animal. It is a really good idea to have a cat-only area in your house, and your dog may like to have a dog-only area as well. This way, you will be sure that your pets are eating the right food, and you are also ensuring that they will have the space and free-time that they need. Overall, make sure that you watch your pets closely to ensure that they are eating the food that they are supposed to eat!

There are lots of houses in the world where cats and dogs live together peaceably! It is just important that you give love, attention and space to each animal equally. One of the best ways to do this is spend individual time with each pet, as well as make sure that at least your cat has its own personal space. With the proper introductions and with the proper attention given to each animal, your dog and cat should be able to get along just great!
